“Those whose approval you seek most give you the least.” -Maurice Chevalier

There are many of us in recovery and life in general constantly seeking other people’s approval and always worrying, asking yourself if you are being judged. The need for approval can negatively affect our performance, creating anxiety, fear and worry. However, what others think of you has little impact on your decision-making about how to spend our time and live your life. In this case, we are unaware of what is significant to us, what motivates us and what makes us happy. I also once heard at a 12 step fellowship meeting if someone is talking about you or judging you then that is their business! There comes a point in our lives where we must decide to do what is best for us. We must strengthen our self confidence and self worth to realize OUR world does not revolve solely around pleasing other people. We must realize it is ok to say no and begin to make effective decisions for our live. At this time, we would spend less time in our heads worrying and feeling anxious and actually start to get things done! Let’s start worrying about our own approval of our own selves and not the approval of others.
