New Jersey Grandmother Gives Hope for Former Addicts

A New Jersey grandmother was recently granted full clemency by New Jersey governor Chris Christie, giving hope to many former addicts who have been trying to turn their lives around. The woman had struggled with drugs, and violent acts to support her drug habit, on-and-off for more than 30 years. With her story, and with Governor Chris Christie’s granting of full clemency for her, New Jersey lawmakers are considering a bill that would enable former addicts to get a Certificate of Recovery.

This certificate would make it more possible for former drug users to get new jobs, places to live, and other things that are difficult to obtain for those who have been convicted or faced prison time. Governor Christie has repeatedly affirmed his commitment to programs of recovery instead of punitive prison terms. He said that imprisoning drug addicts, who after all are suffering from a diesease, “doesn’t make them better, and it doesn’t make us better.” If you have a problem with drugs, you can seek help now and begin to turn your life around.

If you have a problem with alcohol or drug abuse or know someone who does, you should seek help now for yourself or your loved one. Thankfully, there is good help available. Detoxification and behavioral therapy have proven to be effective in treating drug dependence. Addicts are often unable to complete treatment on their own or with family members, so it’s very important to seek the right treatment center.
