A new medication used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children is causing concern. The medication, named Adzenys, is a chewable, candy-flavored tablet that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration earlier this year for use in patients 6 years or older.  Although some physicians see this new form of medication as an easier method for a child to take a pill, others are worried it will lead to abuse in teens and adults.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over ten percent of children ages 4 to 17 suffer from ADHD. Seventy-five percent of these children with ADHD are currently on medication. These medications are sometimes abused by other people in the household, both teens and adults. Stimulant medication abuse is on the rise and is fueled when new medications that appeal to people emerge.

This medication is not only appealing to children, by also to teens and even adults. It could be seen as similar to a piece of candy and therefore people may experiment with trying it. Although the new form may make it easier for children to take, it is risky to have available to others.
