Heroin Use Rising in all Ethnicities

It is no secret that drug users today are moving fast from painkillers to heroin. They switch drug choices for a variety of reasons, but the most common reason is that heroin is more accessible and less expensive. Because of this, the rate of heroin use is rising dramatically among all ethnicities. But researchers want to know more, like which ethnicities are affected the most and the least. This is exactly what researchers at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health have looked into through their new study.

Researchers analyzed data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. They looked at a household sample of over 67,500 people who used drugs between the years of 2002-2005 and 2008-2011. They studies the patterns of drug use in these time frames among the different ethnicities.

They found the group that has the highest rate of heroin use compared to opioids is Nonhispanic Whites. Trailing behind that group is Hispanics, followed by Blacks. Researchers found that although some groups are transitioning to heroin more slowly, it is making its way in all groups due to the availability of opioids decreasing. Now that they know which groups are most affected by it, they will further look into why.

Heroin is a very dangerous and addictive drug. It is also very hard to medically withdrawal from. If you or someone you know needs help with this drug, call Seabrook today. (888) 223-0298
