FTC to Four Loko: Change Its Packaging

The Federal Trade Commission has ordered the makers of Four Loko, a popular mix of energy drink and alcoholic beverage, to change their packaging. The government said that the labeling on the cans of Four Loko was misleading, and tricked consumers into drinking more than they thought. They were accused of implying that a 23.5 oz can of Four Loko is equivalent to one or two beers, when in actually it’s closer to four or five beers. The alcohol content of Four Loko can be up to 12%. Many of the consumers of Four Loko are young people.

Because of Four Loko’s packaging, it’s possible that young people have been drinking much more than they expected, the FTC alleges. Mixing alcohol and energy drinks has also been shown to be particularly dangerous, especially for young people. Studies have shown that younger a person is when they begin drinking, the more likely they are to abuse alcohol. If you’ve been drinking alcohol and energy drinks on a regular basis, you might have a drinking problem.

If you have a problem with alcohol or drug abuse or know someone who does, you should seek help now for yourself or your loved one. Thankfully, there is good help available. Detoxification and behavioral therapy have proven to be effective in treating drug dependence. Addicts are often unable to complete treatment on their own or with family members, so it’s very important to seek the right treatment center.
