Christie’s Non-Violent Drug Offenders Plan

Governor Christie’s goal is clear, he wants to keep violent criminals behind bars and provide low-level, non-violent criminals with drug treatment instead of incarceration. In a recent statement his goal is to expand drug treatment and employment services for low-level offenders. With most low-level crime stemming from drug addiction, local officials agree this focus, with proper funding sources, could help problems like overcrowded jails, reoffending drug users and the stigma of addiction.

Drug court which is voluntary is an alternative to imprisonment that aims to give drug addicted defendants rehabilitation in a closely monitored program. It includes frequent drug testing and court appearances, on top of strict treatment guidelines. It’s believed by many that people who are addicted to a substance should not have to be thrown behind bars, their disease is a chronic neurological brain lapsing disease and should be treated medically, not violently. Individuals should have the ability to seek treatment for their disease, 80% of individuals behind bars today are there for a drug related charge. It’s about time for people recognize the stigma that so many are faced with, and are provided with the help needed to get better.
