British Grandmother Sentenced to Death for Drug Smuggling

A British grandmother was recently sentenced to death in Indonesia after she was caught with more than $2.5 million worth of cocaine. She had been carrying all that amount of cocaine in her suitcase when she arrived on the island of Bali. Prosecutors had only sought a 15-year sentence, but the courts gave the grandmother a death sentence. Indonesia is very strict on drug crimes—most of the 40 foreigners on Indonesia’s death row had been convicted of drug crimes.

The British government has stated that they strongly oppose the British woman’s death sentence. Though this is an extreme case, it does show that lives can be destroyed or cut short by drugs. If you’ve got a problem with drugs, it could be you facing a terrifying sentence from a court. Though people aren’t sentenced to death for drug smuggling in the United States, they can be sentenced to long prison terms.

If you have a problem with alcohol or drug abuse or know someone who does, you should seek help now for yourself or your loved one. Thankfully, there is good help available. Detoxification and behavioral therapy have proven to be effective in treating drug dependence.
