In one county in St. Louis, the prosecutor is looking to urine-testing his employees. The testing is as a response to a claim by federal officials that reported that several prominent people up in the area were implicated in a courthouse drug scandal.

The prosecutor Kelly admitted that random testing was about 90 percent complete in his department. No employee tested positive so far, but one did resign after testing began and before that employee could be tested, but the employee was not a target of a state or federal investigation.

The scandal included remarks from the federal prosecutor that cited unspecified “prominent people” in a failed attempt to keep a man behind bars pending trial on charges that he supplied cocaine to some judges. The testing was in hopes of taking one step toward restoring the public’s trust in the wake of the drug scandal.
