Women’s and Men’s Brains React Differently to Alcoholism

A new study done by Boston University has found that the ways in which women’s and men’s brains react to alcoholism is different. The study primarily focused on recovering alcoholics, and found that women recovered brain white matter more quickly than men, but that men eventually had better white matter recovery rates. In fact, it took almost a year for the men to show any progress in recovering their white matter. However, alcohol seemed to impact women more to begin with, and female alcoholics had less white matter while they were abusing alcohol.

It is a fact that the abuse of alcohol leads directly to changes in the way the brain functions. In fact, alcoholism actually damages the human brain. However, this new study does show that there is hope for recovery. Though men and women have different ways of healing after alcohol dependence, both regenerated white matter in their brains and recovered brain function. If you are using alcohol too much, you are literally damaging your brain, but there is a way out.

If you think you have a problem with alcohol dependence or abuse, you should seek help now and begin improving your overall health today. Thankfully, there is good help available. Detoxification and behavioral therapy have proven to be effective in treating alcohol dependence. Addicts are often unable to complete treatment on their own or with family members, so it’s very important to seek the right treatment center. At Seabrook House, we customize our treatment plans to individual patient’s needs, so you know the help you’re getting is right for you or a loved one. Seabrook House has rehabilitation centers in New Jersey (NJ), Pennsylvania (PA), and an outpatient center in New York (NY). Contact Seabrook House today for any questions about alcohol, addiction, and treatment.
