Sopranos’ Star Discusses Addiction

60 year old Joe Pantoliano, known mostly for his role as Ralph Cifaretto on HBO show The Sopranos and his role as Cypher in the popular movie The Matrix, has taken a very productive and helpful route after dealing with addiction issues in his own life. In his book Asylum: Hollywood Tales From My Great Depression: Mental Dis-Ease, Recovery and Being My Mother’s Son Pantoliano uses himself as an example to allow other people to be open and honest about their past drug and alcohol abuse.

Pantoliano’s book goes into detail about his life, growing up in Hoboken, New Jersey (NJ) and moving on to Hollywood, where over the years he battled addictions to alcohol, food, sex, Vicodin and Percocet. He claims to have grown up in a home that exposed him to obesity, alcoholism, gambling, and organized crime—but his book finds a way to connect with people who grew up in a similar scenario and have dealt with similar addictions. In his book Pantoliano uses the term mental dis-ease to describe his past addictions, so hopefully people can bond with Pantoliano’s experiences and get the help that they need to overcome their own addictions.

It’s definitely encouraging to see someone like Pantoliano open up about his past and try to help people through learning from his own mistakes. Reading about other people that have overcome issues that you or a loved one struggle with can be the inspiring force that kick starts your recovery process. Recovery is a process that begins with honesty and confession, continues with rehabilitation, and down the road hopefully it turns into being healthy and sober. Seabrook House is a drug rehab and alcoholism detox treatment center that offers individually inspired programs that provide the patient with the unique combination of therapies and treatments that suit their needs and personal history. All Seabrook House programs are grounded in the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). The Seabrook House Model® of treatment includes a multifaceted medical approach to alcohol and other drugs including opiate detoxification, gender-specific therapy with special emphasis on relapse prevention, and family intervention services. Seabrook House has treatment centers in New Jersey (NJ) and Pennsylvania (PA) with an outpatient office in New York (NY).
