Second Chance after Alcoholism

A sad truth in our society today is that former addicts are often judged and deemed incapable of second chance opportunities. It’s true that there’s a high competition for jobs and opportunities but it’s very encouraging, especially for those who currently struggle with addictions or substance abuse, to see a comeback story from someone who has recovered from an addiction. Larry Eustachy is one of those comeback stories.

Eustachy was once one of the top college basketball coaches in America at Iowa State. In five seasons, his Iowa State teams won two conference championships and he was named the AP’s National Coach of the Year in 2000. He built a strong foundation and reputation at Iowa State and he was a candidate for many high profile coaching jobs across the country. But during the spring of 2003, Eustachy was photographed drunk posing with college students at parties after Iowa State’s road games, and the photos were published in the Des Moines Register. Eustachy called a news conference after the photos were published and admitted that he had entered an alcoholism treatment center in Minnesota. Following the news conference he was suspended and later resigned as head coach of Iowa State, his marriage fell apart, and he had officially hit rock bottom. Nine years later Eustachy admits that the ordeal helped him find his spirituality, his humility and, most important, his sobriety. Eustachy has turned his life and career around at Southern Miss and has been alcohol free for nearly nine years. He remains an avid 12-step follower and he has spent a lot of time in the past nine years counseling other addicts.

Eustachy certainly experienced a fall from grace, but he claims that he’s a stronger person as a result of the past 12 years and he has reinvented himself and the Southern Miss basketball program through his second chance. Alcoholism can take many things away from your life, as it did to Eustachy’s life, but it’s how you respond to these challenges that ultimately defines you. Getting professional help for alcoholism can be an embarrassing admission, but it is a humbling experience that can get your life back on track. Seabrook House has had many alcoholic patients successfully go through treatment and return to normal lives with second chances. Our structured, nurturing programs, along with the principles grounded in the Twelve Step philosophy of recovery, combine to foster the kind of change necessary for a clean and sober life. Our wide range of addiction treatment services include intensive stabilization (also known as detoxification), individual and group therapy, and education in the biological, social and spiritual aspects of addiction in residential treatment. New York (NY) and New Jersey (NJ) residents who struggle with alcoholism or substance abuse and are ready to make the commitment towards a successful recovery should consider the excellent and renowned addiction treatment right in your back yard—  Seabrook House. If this story resonates with you and you feel like you need help with your addiction, contact Seabrook House today to get on the road to recovery!
