NHL Player Overcomes Alcoholism

Jordin Tootoo has had many highs and lows in his life. Obviously the road to becoming the starting forward for the National Hockey League’s Nashville Predators has been a bright spot in his life, but there have been low points in his personal life. Jordin’s brother Terence committed suicide in 2002 in the wake of a drunk-driving arrest, and Jordin consequently developed the disease of alcoholism as a result of coping with that tragedy. After years of being unable to deal with his alcoholism problem, Tootoo voluntarily made a choice in December 2010 to enter the NHL Player’s Association Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program. He did his time in rehab and was released in January 2011 after he was able to take a step back and deal with the issues in his life.

Jordin recently celebrated a year of being sober and he has become a different person since finishing rehab. This year he started the Team Tootoo fund in honor of his brother, which dedicates it work to suicide prevention and awareness. Also in December 2011 he held a wristband sale at a Predators home game for the Salvation Army and gave autographs to fans who brought in toys. Jordin has truly turned his personal life around from just a few short years ago when alcoholism dominated it. He is now viewed as one of the NHL’s role models for confronting his problems and being committed to staying clean.
