Ex-Miss Russia Struggles with Prescription Drugs
Anna Malova, Miss Russia 1998, proves that people of all shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and backgrounds can succumb to the forces of drug or alcohol addiction. Malova was jailed in early December 2011 for repeatedly forging prescriptions to get painkillers, and the judge of her New York (NY) drug case is giving her a last chance to get her case dismissed if she completes 18 months of drug treatment. Malova was a doctor in her homeland Russia, but she abused her power and apparent privilege as a Miss Universe contestant and now finds herself in a struggle with prescription pain killer (Vicodin, Percocet, Oxycontin) addiction.
Most people who take prescription medications use them responsibly. But, when abused—that is, taken by someone other than the patient for whom the medication was prescribed, or taken in a manner or dosage other than what was prescribed—prescription medications can produce serious adverse health effects and can lead to addiction. Very similar to dangerous addictions to other drugs like methamphetamines, cocaine, heroin, and alcohol, detoxification for prescription medications is often a necessary step towards recovery. Detoxification is the process of allowing the body to rid itself of a drug while managing the symptoms of withdrawal. It is often the first step in a drug treatment program and should be followed by treatment with a behavioral-based therapy and/or a medication, if available. Detox alone, with no follow-up, is not treatment—and this is why Seabrook House offers detoxification services, rehab and therapy services, and aftercare services.
