Exploring Music as Therapy

Recovering from an addiction can be a difficult and seemingly endless process. In today’s age, people continuously go in and out of rehabilitation centers without obtaining a lasting recovery because during their rehab they weren’t able to find that specific therapy or routine that gives them the power to escape their addiction. Some people half heartedly go into rehabilitation or therapy because they are required to or they are doing it to satisfy friends or family—but they truly aren’t committed to it. It’s important for those recovering from an addiction to not only be mentally and physically committed to the process, but to explore different therapies, hobbies, and routines in order to find which one works best. A new hobby or therapy can truly help transform habits and routines, and it can also really change the overall way that one thinks and goes about doing things. The addiction treatment programs at Seabrook House are unique and designed to help people who are truly committed to a lasting recovery. One of the unique therapies offered at Seabrook House is Music Therapy.

The music therapy process connects patients to their creative power, so that emotional and spiritual needs can be met without the use of substances.  The primary goal is to create a “safe place” within which the participants can explore their relationship with their Higher Power, obstacles to recovery, and new ways of being.  In addition, music experiences such as listening, singing, playing and imaging are seen as ways to identify and practice new ways of responding to stress/anxiety, to gain insight into old behaviors and improve moods. Music can be a truly powerful tool for some people recovering from an addiction. Through the music therapy offered at Seabrook House, patients will be able to explore music in ways that they may not have even thought of before. Making a mental connection with music through listening, singing, or playing can be an excellent way to divert attention and energy into something besides drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, or any other unhealthy compulsion.

The professional treatment team at Seabrook House understands the unique nature of addiction and consequently understands the unique nature of recovery from addiction. Different people respond to different things—and some people might respond extremely well to music therapy. It’s because of this potential that Seabrook House implements a wide variety of holistic therapies into their recovery programs. Seabrook House is an internationally recognized drug rehabilitation and detoxification treatment center that has facilities located in Bridgeton, New Jersey (NJ), Tioga County, Pennsylvania (PA), and New York (NY). Local residents to these areas have the luxury of a close commute to such well respected and internationally recognized detoxification and rehabilitation care—whereas residents of areas like Boston, Massachusetts (MA) and beyond have the ability to escape their original abusing environment and truly seclude themselves in order to completely recover.  Seabrook House is able to provide patients with quality addiction recovery programs through unique treatments like music therapy.
