Is my Husband an Alcoholic?

Alcoholism is characterized by dependence and loss of control. If you think your husband depends physically or emotionally on alcohol, then he might have a drinking problem. Some questions that you need to ask yourself; can he control his drinking once he starts and just have a couple of drinks instead of always getting drunk? Has his drinking led to missed work, drunk driving, omitting responsibilities or getting in trouble with the law? If so, then you might need to consider looking for treatment options for your husband. There comes a point where someone may believe that they are just a social or casual drinker, but it takes others to help them realize when they are facing a potential drinking problem.

But even if you show concern for his problem, you have to understand that you can’t control your husband or his behavior. He has to admit that he has a problem on his own, and he needs to want to do something about it if he’s ever going to change. So don’t take it personally if he doesn’t want to listen to your suggestions and get help for his drinking problem. It’s called denial and is the biggest obstacle preventing an alcoholic from getting the help they need. If you put continuous effort into trying to get him help, like setting up and intervention or searching for rehabilitation centers or even visiting rehabilitation centers, and he continues to drink, then it might be time to re-evaluate your marriage. No one can force your husband to change, so unless he wants to, it won’t happen. It may be a sad realization to come to, but it just might be the push that he needs to understand that he needs professional help.

What you and your husband need to realize is that alcoholism can be treated. Alcoholism treatment programs use both counseling and medications to help a person stop drinking. Treatment has helped many people stop drinking and rebuild their lives, and it can help your husband rebuild his. There are many different treatment centers that are available for alcoholism treatment, but if you live on the east coast there are few better options than Seabrook House. Seabrook House is an internationally recognized private and exclusive inpatient drug rehab and alcoholism detoxification treatment center who has achieved an elite CARF accreditation status, ensuring that rehab patients receive the highest quality treatment. Located in Bridgeton, New Jersey (NJ), programs at Seabrook House are structured to meet the needs of the patient as an individual– which allows for a more successful recovery process because the professional treatment team understands that each recovery process is unique. If your husband has accepted the fact that he needs professional help, then look no further than Seabrook House.
